I am curious as to why a mortuary affairs guy needs to go to SERE?

don't sweat it. what you don't figure out in the academic phase, they'll school into you during the practical application phase.

Academically it might be the same but it's geared toward aviators so I am sure it has been padded and made safe for limp wristed consumption.
