I figured what the hell, I didn't welcome him last year so I might as well now in spite of the fact that he came and seemingly has never returned in a years time.

DAMN! I always wondered about that story! Of course, when I heard it, it was 'off the Bco barracks' so I didn't give it much credence.
it was the 4th floor of the Apt building he was living in. Took a header off of the balcony. Landed on the side of his face on the sidewalk.

The scarey thing is he placed 5th in the Best Ranger Comp that year less than 30 days later. Hardest Dude I ever Knew.
Well, now that it's back up, I might as well throw in a few memories of Merritt to help divert attention from Baker's stepping on his own crank.

I had a good friend in Bco who, at the time, was an RTO in Merritt's plt. They were sitting around having a discussion about actions taken in Somalia, which had occurred just several months earlier, and Merritt told him, "If they ever take my legs, I want you to throw me in your ruck, and I'll pull security from the rear." My friend Jim said to me, "I got the feeling that he really wasn't shitting me..."

On at least one occasion that I know of he filled his ruck with cinder blocks, humped 25mi out to an off post pond to go fly fishing for the weekend, and then humped it all back. That was taking a break from training.

Merritt defined "hard" for a lot of us young Rangers. (it also goes to show that you can be hard, and half deaf at the same time...)

When I lived off exit 3, I'd hear a knock on my door on a Saturday morning. It would be Merritt. He had humped a 80lb ruck from post (he lived in front of the mail room at the time) all the way to my apartment at Willow Creek. This wasn't once, it was many times. He was also the best friend a guy could ever have. Flat tire 2 AM in Phenix City; he's on the way....

I love that crazy, sick SOB....
