Land of Giants

A friend's daughter is home from New York City for Thanksgiving so we cruised one of the old growth redwood trails just east of town today. I live amongst some of the most majestic living things ever to grace this planet. The tree Don is standing in front of is known locally as the Blue Spring Goliath. There's no way you can convey how huge these things are in the two-dimensional form of a photograph. You really have "to be there". This tree weighs more than one million pounds, contains 1800 gallons of water, stands over 30 stories high, and is estimated to be about 1700 years old. It contains enough board feet of lumber to build a dozen 2600 sq. ft. homes. Less than 1% of the old growth redwood trees here before white settlement still remain. Protecting what we have left is a hot button political issue vigorously supported by Republicans, Democrats, and Greens alike, especially those of us who live amongst these fabulous giants.

Awesome photo! That is the biggest tree I've ever seen.

That looks like a great location for an upcoming Spring Motorhome roadtrip with the family.

Odd that we lived in CA for 2 years (Watsonville), but didn't hit Yosemite or the Sierra's (except to drive through to Reno and/or back to Utah).

She squat down like that because my dog was just a few feet away and she was trying to coax her into the frame.
