Chinese Bandits?

Postby Lost_Jock » June 4th, 2007, 10:29 pm

I've just been reading this thread on ARRSE: http://www.arrse.co.uk/cpgn2/index.php? ... 29#1316250

It all sounds very interesting, but when I did a Yahoo search for more info, all I turned up was the same text posted in numerous fora (forums?) and guestbooks throughout the net. As far as I saw everything was posted this year.

Do any of you guys know of this unit?

Regards

I'm sure one of the more versed Rangers from that time will be along soon. There is a time difference so you’ll have to wait a bit.

That particular unit was a battalion scout platoon in the First Cavalry Division. Not a Ranger unit. The patch is post-Viet-Nam.

He seems to have been very busy on various forums and guestbooks.
Strange he hasn't posted here yet.

I looked over this briefly, and while there were a number of small units that did recon stuff (and this unit could easily be one of them), there's something that don't sit right with this guy.

His stories all have the flavor of "war stories". For instance, he mentions that they regularly went without food (I think a meal every other day was the phrase he used, or something like that), and that they didn't carry grenades or much ammo.

Reminds me of the time I did a HANO jump into Hanoi and terminated Gen Giap with a pen knife. Too bad I had to kill myself to keep from being captured.

As best I remember the Recon units carried more food and ammo than the line companies because it was harder to re-supply them. I know we were always trying to get them to trade "LRRP" rations ( the fore runner of MRE's) for goodies like peaches or fruit salad 'n stuff when ever we had occasion to work with them. And I can't see why they didn't carry grenades, which work pretty well at night when you're trying to break contact and GTFOD.

OTOH, WTF do I know? I was a PFC in a line company, and for some strange reason nobody ever told me shit. Communications problems I guess, so maybe I just didn't get the memo on that one, too. Some Colonel probably lost his pension for the oversight.

He also mentions that some people had inferred he wasn't legit, and sounded a bit like he was prep'ng the crowd for Plan B.
Since he signs his name Ranger C*****rs , maybe someone should ask him over for a little clarification.

And much of what he has to say is absolute BULLSHIT!
Some examples:
1) He says that they were eating LRP Rations in Spring of '66.
LRP Rations weren't issued until Fall of '66

2) He talks of not using camo sticks, and not using insect repellant, and wearing issue jungle fatigues on patrol.
Never happened on ANY LRRP Mission, however some LRRPs did wear indiginous clothing.

And I agree.....a lot of his writing sounds like fairy tales..uh...war stories.

That's the way I see it.

Guys would ask him questions about a story and he would refuse to answer about anything, and then would post another.

I firmly believe that he doesn't do it to incite conversation, but to only post the story and leave it at that. To me that equals spamming.

Another interesting tidbit.
His site lists all the "team members" of his unit, including KIA's. I checked the Virtual Wall and got 0 for 3.
Must have been one heckuvah secret squirrel unit.

Look for yourself, my eyes aren't what they were back in the day when I was making 8000 meter hits with my .45.

Oh, and one of his posts details how they didn't carry toilet paper , either. Apparently they used the "swipe and flick" method.
So if anyone runs into this guy, DO NOT SHAKE HANDS WITH HIM.

This was an interesting thread. It's good to see the response was adequate in that the consensus tells of a poser at large.
