You have a great attitude, I sincerely hope you get what you want. Some of this may apply to you, some may not because every unit is different.
I did spend most of my time in a scout (recon) platoon, but with a different division. When I was in, they typically waited until you had 6 mnths-1 year on the line before you could "tryout."
I'm not trying to make it out to be highspeed, or "hard" in comparison to what the BTDT's have done...getting in was actually pretty simple.
The tryout consisted of a PT test, 12 mile roadmarch with 60 lbs ruck, and empty LBV (EIB times), smoke session, then a written test of basic infantry stuff (ie-range of weapons, basic oporder questions, land nav etc..., and an informal interview with a SL.
It was a good time, all NCO's were top notch (tabbed and headed to the Q-course), the joes were motivated. Typically new joes showed up as brand new E-3s. Once you hit E-4, they started to hand out Sniper (a few of our guys even went to the Marine Corps Scout/Sniper school) and Ranger school slots like candy.
If you get on a long gun, you get to work with one other person for the duration of a whole field problem.
We virtually never did details (ie-post police, area beautification, KP etc...), no kevlars in the field.
Like I said, every unit is different, I was just relating what my time was like.
