B-1 Bomber Crash, "Didn't YOU Lower the Landing Gear?&q

Post by agonyea »

I Thought You Lowered The Landing Gear?
September 21, 2006: Last May, a U.S. Air Force B-1 bomber landed at Diego Garcia without lowering its landing gear. That caused eight million dollars in damage to the aircraft, and $15,000 in damage to the air strip. The cause of the accident was failure of either the pilot or co-pilot to lower the landing gear. How is that possible? Well, such things do happen, although rarely. In this case, both pilots were tired after a long (over ten hours) mission, and were busy with other procedures and paperwork. No one noticed the red warning lights (indicating the landing gear was not down.) It was human error, as is the case with most military and civilian aircraft accidents these days

Can you imagine the sound that made? Sheeesh...

Amazing, only in the Airforce can four people make a multimillion dollar mistake, then they make it this great team effort. If it were Sgts and Cpl's, would it be such a "whoopsie! la-de-dah we goofed..."?
Pretty sure those 4 airmen pointed out, as well as the rest of the team in the photo are the recovery team.

The pilots are probably off crying into their pillows.

For 15 years I flew a turbo Saratoga which was retractable. The line is: When you fly a plane with retractable gear, it's not "If" but "When" you land gear up.

At least they didn't have any props to bend in this case.

I call bullshit.

No damn way even "super-pilot america" could land a B1 gear up and not leave some "obvious" damage to the fuselage.

A big ass crane at the Diego Garcia harbor, lifted her up -- using air bags, got the wheels down & locked.

The aircraft is now being inspected for possible repair & return to service. The incident is under investigation.

I guess this confirms the B-1's "Bitchin' Betty" anunciator doesn't include "Landing Gear...Landing Gear...Landing Gear..."
