I just don't believe that you can be a good leader in anything, whether it be an Officer in the Army, a captain of a sports team, holding a management position at work, etc. if you do not have the experience of those that you are leading.
I think you can be a good leader even if you don't have the exact same experience. If you listen, use your empathy, and act accordingly you can lead. You also have to be a follower!!! But not every great officer was enlisted first, nor is every prior service officer a great leader. Leadership, is to me, a set of characteristics that are reflected by an individual's character, discipline, drive, and dedication to his subordinates and his profession. Now if you feel YOU need to be enlisted first that is a personal choice that only you can make. Just some food for thought...
The other struggle for me is that I want to be out in the field doing things actively, not issuing commands from behind a desk.
Officers do get put behind desks, many don't like to be there. All good leaders lead from the front and share the hardships of thier men unless an essential mission dictates otherwise. I only know what it is like to be an LT but I spend our field time with my platoon. My CO is also out there most of the time as well.

Don't get too wrapped around the axle about this. Take your time, look into yourself, and make the right decision for yourself. You will serve your comrades best that way.

Thank you for your interest in serving and best of luck to you.
