Islam, Islamism and Terrorism

Post by Chiron »

LTC (R) Bill Schwartz sent this.

My classmate, COL(R)Tex DeAtkine, a former FAO and preeminent Middle
East expert, has written a great article found in the January issue of
Army Magazine. I highly recommend his 8 page analysis. Superb work.

Another word (touched upon in the article) that I see misused is "Islamic fundamentalism". According to many, Fundamentalists are ones that would apply the religion according to its original commandements or try to live Islam as close as possible to its precepts. The new breed that preaches violence can be better labeled as Extremists.
Where do you draw the line?

The day after 9-11 I bought a copy of the Koran. Interesting read. I no longer wonder why countries that are Islamic states are all failed societies that have produced nothing but second rate war since 10th century.

After reading the entire article I disagree with you. The article points out the difference between a Fundamentalist and an Islamist. In most cases they both "apply the religion according to its original commandments or try to live Islam as close as possible to its precepts" and in fact the article points out the "nature of the beast" and how it becomes "the mother of all problems". It also makes reference to various historical points that I liked.
