Suggested Reading Material

Post by musicmano3596 »

Hello Rangers and Vets,

So this deployment is exctruciatingly boring, as such I have rekindled my interest in reading. I am looking for material that will assist me in becoming a better person, soldier, infantryman, paratrooper, and aspiring Ranger. My collection as of now consists of FM 3-21.8 (Former FM 7-8) The Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad, Sua Sponte (have read before but will be reading again), The Ranger Handbook, Team Reaper, Lest We Forget, For Love of Country, Roberts Ridge and The outpost. I am open to anything. Even FM's. Being an RTO at the brigade battle desk does not afford me much time to get hands on experience with MOS related skills, but I keep current any ways I can. My NCO (also infantry) gives us weapon classses, and I spend my freetime reading materials stated above, and disssembling weapons, performing this to EIB standards as I can, etc. Any and all advice as to how I can better myself while in this duty position would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
-Caleb

"Back in the Fight'' by Joe Kapacziewski. This will let you know what type of person you should aspire to be if you want to be a Ranger.

Rangers,

That book was a very good read. I do not have it here with me, but it is one of the few that I own back in the rear.

October 2005, SSG Joe Kapacziewski was an U.S. Army ranger on his second deployment to iraq, 5th deployment in total, when traveling in a stryker with the hatch open, an insurgent dropped a grenade into the stryker. The resulting blast shattered his right leg and also the same arm. After 40 operations attempting to restore full capabilities back to his leg, the doctors concluded it was impossible. In 2007 he traveled to Portsmouth, VA for the amputation. Since then he has conducted 5 more combat deployments with a prosthetic leg. The book was a great inspiration and example of incredible mental fortitude and what it looks like to live the Ranger Creed every day.

I believe since then SFC Kapacziewski has been promoted to 1SG but I can't seem to find anything online to support this.

Respectfully

I met SFC Kap when he and members of his squad were MEDEVACED to Walter Reed, and have stayed in contact with him for years. He and his wife, Kimberly, are a fine Ranger family. From time to time, when he is at Fort Benning, he makes it a point to go by and run with the RASP class that in session. Great Motivation!

Ranger Jim,

My buddy that I knew in high school actually had him as one of his RASP instructors. He has nothing but respect for him. Wish I had the opportunity to meet him in my short time at Ft Benning.

I certainly can't give any advice about soldiering, but I do read a lot. I humbly suggest The Art of War by Sun Tzu, if you haven't read it already.

As Jim eluded to, I may be slightly biased :)
