Most "exciting" special operations force?

Post by Astraeus14 »

I was spending time looking through various forums such as the armyranger, corpsman, socnet, etc forums and I've noticed a trend among medics who are in SOFs, they all said if they could do it over again they would go Pararescue. A Navy SARC said he would be a PJ because they are more exciting.

That just got me wondering, what do you Rangers think the most "exciting" SOF is based on what you've seen while serving? By exciting I mean most interesting on a day to day basis, which has the most thrills, or whatever you think exciting means. Or you could define it as who gets the least amount of tedious, repetitive, or boring assignments. Also, in your opinion what are the most boring missions (foreign internal defense/reconnaissance/etc)?

I also totally understand that almost anyone in the military is going to have those moments, especially in the infantry or SOCOM community, but just comparing special ops forces here.

Thanks in advance.

Despite who is posting it...I think it could make for an interesting thread.

I personally think AFSOC is by far some of the most professional "entry level" SOF I have been around. They are truly masters of their trade. As far as exciting, I would say they have the coolest "pipeline" since they get to do MFF and scuba right off the bat. As far as the actual job, not sure I would personally want to do it, CSAR is not exactly exhilerating all the time.

I think as far as actual jobs, Rangers have it the coolest, as it's all DA, and usually don't have to mess around with any FID-type missions.

Jim, I have searched this site quite a bit and have yet to find anything that directly answers the question. At best I could take clues off random post and try to piece an answer together, but I figured the best way to get an accurate answer was to ask a question. I apologize if this has been asked on this site before.

Goon175 thanks for your answer. Thanks for expressing your thoughts on not only training but deployments (that seems to be what really matters).

I guess I should've asked a different question that would get to the point a little better. Which missions do you find to be the most exciting? DA, reconnaissance, CSAR, FID, etc.

Thanks.

Then maybe you should start reading the FAQ's portion first. The Rangers on this forum have earned their titles. Anyone with the rank of Ranger shall be addressed as such. Ranger Jim would have been the proper way to address. Attention to detail!

The reason you have found no answer is that there is no answer. What you ask is a very subjective thing. The military by its very nature is long periods of boredom followed by short bursts of excitement. It doesn't matter if you are EOD, or an engineer building a makeshift bridge, or cooking dinner for 500 plus hungry Rangers, there will always be the mundane tasks that need to be done. Everyone has a role to play; the pilot that gets you there, the guy that makes sure your pay is going to the right bank, the person making sure your shot records are up to date so you can deploy.. everyone.

It is the same in the "Special Operations" community. What you are asking is similar to the oft asked question "Who is the Best?" I ask you, which car do you think is the most exciting tor drive? A Ferrari 458 Italia is a bad assed vehicle to be sure. Zero to sixty in about 3 seconds, with a top speed of 202mph, but how much fun would it be to drive in 2 feet of snow? I doubt you could even do it. However, a Ford Excursion with a 6 inch lift and monster tires will literally take you on a tour of glaciers in Iceland, but not so fast in the straights or the twisties.

Having never deployed to combat, I cannot and will not pontificate on conditions downrange. I can tell you that in the military, if you aren't currently deployed you are getting ready to. Some units deploy more than others and must be at a higher state of readiness, such as Special Operations units, but they all have their share of minutia that must be done. Gear must be maintained, records kept. I will say this, there were more times than I can recall that I couldn't believe we were getting paid to do the job.

So the question begs, what to YOU think is fun and exciting?
