Quitter

Post by Bushwack »

A son of a person I know at work just quit his chance at RASP. He gave his father a line of B.S. about how he was not trained properly! He did not even try.

My son says it’s not for everyone. As has been said here many times, either a Ranger or a story.

The shame is this kid took a slot from someone that might have made it.

That pisses me off too. That's like the little faggots that get ATTRS slots to RS and fail Land Nav or PT intentionally because they miss Mamma. Or because they get sand in thier hole. Weak. Pathetic. I better stop before I get all riled up...

I went to school with 3 other guys from my company- 1 failed the pt test, 1 failed land nav, and the 3rd blew his knee out in the mountains running down the mountain to get away from a lighting storm.
I still get irritated thinking about the first two shitheads.

I don't understand.....why volunteer to test yourself and then quit before the test even starts. I am not a Ranger or Airborne, but I never quit anything I started out to do. Taught that lesson to my son the whole time he was growing up. It's one thing to not make the cut, at least an honest effort was made. Too bad that lack of effort can not be discovered before a RASP slot is given.

Completion of Ranger school was an absolute must for me. I had been serving as an advisor to the 42d Vietnamese Ranger Battalion for 17 months, then OCS. Most of the NCOs in the advisor team were Ranger Instructors and superb leaders. I graduated OCS, took jump refresher and started RS. I earned my tab and will assure you that I got no breaks from any of the RIs who served with me. I got medically recycled by having a pinched nerve in my right arm. When I was sent back to Benning, MSG Almo Mercier who was on my team, almost broke my heart with his encouraging lecture: "Ranger, get your ass back here and finish Ranger training or I'll track you down and kill you."

I never really understood the whole volunteer then quit thing myself either. As an aside, I happened across an article not too long ago about one of the quitters who later got in trouble with the law after deploying and was trying to use PTSD as his excuse for being a shithead.
Oh well. I guess if you fall into the 10% at one thing, you probably will fall into it in others.

Roughly 10% of every group that comes from airborne to RASP quits that very day, before anything happens. That's the first question that's asked "who wants to quit?" Invariably, there are several, all with their own "valid" reasons. It's disgusting. Say "I quit" once, even in your head and it's a much easier path to take the next time you have to display any sort of intestinal fortitude.

I would guess that a lot of the 10% are quitting because they expected something different when they got to basic or airborne school and realized they were over their heads when it came to something like RASP. Not to mention some of them I'm sure hear about the worldwide assignment for quitting/failing/injuries and think gee I can get stationed at _____.
