GSXR wrenching
Well, after my last track day, I knew it was time to check valve clearances... I just got a bit lazy and let it go a bit further in the mileage than normal. I am pushing 25K miles on the engine, and I like to check the valve clearance every 10k or so... well, with new plugs in hand, I got to work yesterday morning.
All of the valves were in spec, but on the TIGHT side. So... after swapping around shim's, I had to wind up buying nine new shims. Those little fuckers are EXPENSIVE!!!!
Suzuki gets almost 10 bucks each for those little fuckers.
So, anyway... she's all back together, on the LOOSE side... LOOSE is good with a Gixxer, that's for sure.

I ran into issues on the #2 intake valve on the #3 cylinder. Had to remove the cams three different times before it was all good to go. Luckily, this bike is a BREEZE to time...
BTW, the shop wanted 300 bucks, plus parts to do this job. I wound up only spending 109 bucks, for nine shims and a new valve cover gasket and plugs. Saved myself alot of money, and I know it's right now.
Cheers!

No sir... it's the stock exhaust that came with the bike. It's a 2005 GSXR 1000. I have removed all the stickers off the bike, because I am getting ready to paint it. I left the stock pipe on because, seriously, there is no real need to change it. I spent a fuck load of money in the suspension, and power commander, airbox mods... the thing is a BEAST!!!bulldogg wrote:Beautiful bike, is that a custom pipe?
Tons of fun on the track.

Is the stock GSXR cam too big and kills low-mid range torque?
I always go a bit towards the tight side on valve lash when I'm building racing motors and the cam is properly selected.
Loosening the lash alters the duration at the valve and causes quicker valve opening and closing but it is rougher on the valvetrain.
However I don't mess with the motorcycle stuff.
Does anybody recognize the location of the bottom pic:

I have been building racing engines since I was 14. My dad was a wrench for Smokey Yunick in Daytona when he was in college. I have a 1970 Nova SS that runs 10.18 - 10.20's consistently on a 406 naturally aspirated small block and 9 inch slick.jakeshoe wrote:Is the stock GSXR cam too big and kills low-mid range torque?

What you gotta understand is... on my drag car, we set / check valve lash after every six to ten runs... on my bike, the valve lash settings last for 10k to 15k miles. When I say "tight" or "loose", I am referring to the factory allotted specs.
My small block is running 18 degree AFR heads, with Jesel shaft rockers and a custom ground Engle solid roller cam shaft. A complete different animal.
There are no pushrods in my GSXR. It is a shim under bucket / overhead cam set up... so, running a looser clearance on the valves is actually EASIER on the valvetrain.

I hope you'll post pics up after the paint job. I used to have a business doing custom paint work on jet skis, planes and other assorted toys. If you're up for suggestions I can recommend a paint that will last a LONG time and is very chip and scratch resistant. PM me if you're interested.
