I'm with you, Ranger Chiron. I read the article wondering "How hot was it?"Chiron wrote: I had to laugh. Sorry about that.
a record number of casualties in the race as runners became overwhelmed by the heat. Temperatures reached 20C (68F) and conditions were tougher by the 70 per cent humidity.
... serious heat conditions, indeed!

Trust me, for the NE of England, that's hot!
Just joking... it is normally wet and cold up there, but I can't see those heats contributing to the deaths?!
On the topic of Scotalnd being No1 most violent place in the developed world and England No2... definately, without a doubt!
We have always had a vicious streak throughout our population, mainly a drinking culture over here, everyone goes to the pub and gets smashed and over the last 10 years it has become so commercial, with bars and and clubs offering really cheap drinks and leathal shots and it is a case of get legless...on a Friday /Saturday night every city / town / village is like a warzone - I kid you not
Quaint we are not!

No way! Never.
We may fight each other in the streets after a drink, but we do that with fists...like men.
No one has guns, nobody gets shots, banks and liquor stores rarely get robbed at gun point, schools do not get stormed and kids brutally murdered... I would not want a gun wielding society like the USA. 100%
Put a gun in a Brits hand, we'd have a brutal place here.
I know that I cam walk around safely, knowing that 99% of people do not carry weapons... I have not come across a weapon outside the military and our society is the better for it.
Any violence is drink / drug related - the problem is sorting that out.
Nothing to do with weapons!
Now I know that is alien to you over there... it is part of your culture, part of your history and woven into your 'rights' (?)
But here, the public do not have the right to have a weapon, you can't have something on your person that can kill (makes sense)... the police do not carry weapons (though each force has Firearms Officers and the capital has specialist units and is a different kettle of fish).
Maybe your argument will be that we should have the right to protect ourselves.... against who? People robbing our houses; don't carry guns, being mugged in the street; they won't have a gun - or the chance of them having a gun is very very very slim.
Arm everyone and that chance rockets.... we're all fucked!

Data reported by the FBI:
In 1995, there were 21,597 people murdered in the US, 12,066 with handguns, yet only 179 justifiable homicides by civilians using handguns to defend themselves.
In 1996, handguns were used to kill 30 people in Britain, 211 in Germany and 9,390 in America.
Americans are 15 times more likely to be killed by gunfire than Europeans.

When a people are armed then you would be suprised how nice people become. I live in the south You would be amazed to know that it is rare that any of the things you mention happen here. Why? Because nobody has any idea who is armed so you need to be nice to most everyone. I find the idea of protecting my family with a gun much more civilized than protecting them with a ball bat or a beer bottle. The again I have never lived in a home with out at least 10 guns in it.Southern_Brit wrote:Put a gun in a Brits hand, we'd have a brutal place here..
Huh? you yourself said that the towns and cities were like a "war zone".Southern_Brit wrote:I know that I cam walk around safely, knowing that 99% of people do not carry weapons... I have not come across a weapon outside the military and our society is the better for it...
Like I said, I consider a Cricket bat ...Beer bottle ....trash can lid ...you name it, ...a weapon.Southern_Brit wrote:Any violence is drink / drug related - the problem is sorting that out.

If one person sincerely wants to kill another then it will happen whether or not a society allows for the populous to have a weapon. A steak knife to the kidneys, a pint glass through the ear... people are emminenlty adaptable to do what they want whether it is right or wrong.

When I say I can walk around without fear, I genuinely mean that... whether at the shops or in residential areas - I know that the likelyhood of someone producing a gun is minimal... as I said 99.9% people will not have one - it stands to reason that I will not have to fear one...again I do not know anyone or have ever heard of anyone that has been subject to a gun related crime or seen an incident.
It is hard for you all to comprehend, I understand, but I don't think I need one to protect myself or family. Yes, it would obviously be easy for me to say it is there to take out drug crazed junkies intent on robbing me etc.... but the problem is if British citizens are allowed to carry them or own them, whatever, then surely the stores that are robbed and the disputes in homes, fights in the streets, road rage incidents all have the potential for guns to be produced!
It is too easier to pull a trigger and I think the death rates will rise and rise if guns are permitted... really.
I haven't got my head in the sand, criminals have guns, gangs in London and Manchester (etc...) have guns and there is a growing 'black on black' problem but I still don't want guns in our society. I see the problems of gun related and accidents in the USA and many other countries.
Maybe you will never understand, but as I said, it is something inter-woven into your culture.
I'm not a fucking tree hugging leftie.... far from it ( ) but I know what I am talking about in relation to the UK and this topic.
