Gates of Fire was required reading on one of the ODA's that I was attached to during OEF. The book speaks very strongly about the brotherhood of being a warrior. If you have not read it, and you have the time to read it you will not be disappointed. The opening passage is something that any warrior can relate to.

Ranger Chiron, I have a question; What is the meaning of the inverted "V" symbol that appears on Spartan shields?

The Greek letter lambda on the face was used by Spartans (Lakedaimonians) during the Peloponnesian War era. Which represented LACEDAEMON the Sparta city-state.

They used to say....Return with your shield or upon it.

It's the Greek letter "L". Lakedaemon was the name of the area that Sparta was in. Many called them Lakedaemonians.

My grandmother was Lakedaemonian.
Also Check my signature line. That's what got me thru RS.

One old story that my dad used to tell me went like this.

The Spartans would never accept dishonor. It was always death before dishonor. The Spartan boys prior to becoming 13 and entering manhood were taught this.

One day a boy was walking for days without food and came upon a fox that belonged to someone. He “stoleâ€

Remember three battles in ancient Greece.

1) Thermopylae
2) Salamis
3) Marathon

Those battles preserved democracy. Without them who knows what would have been.

I'm just ramblin on. See you in the morning.
