Medal of Honor Banned from Army and Air Force Base Stores
Ability to play as the Taliban prompts military to ban sale of the upcoming reboot on bases.

By Kat Bailey, 09/02/2010

The controversy that has been steadily brewing around the ability to play as the Taliban in Medal of Honor has gotten the upcoming shooter banned from military stores (via Kotaku).
The Army and Air Force Exchange Services confirmed that no store located on an Army or Air Force bases will be able to sell the reboot. That ban includes 49 GameStops located across the continental U.S., and to all military bases worldwide.

In an email sent out to employees, GameStop said they will be pulling all marketing material relating to the game from those stores. Customers wishing to reserve a copy of Medal of Honor will be directed to an off base GameStop location.

"GameStop fully supports AAFES in this endeavor and is sensitive to the fact that in multiplayer mode one side will assume the role of Taliban fighter," the email reads.

Medal of Honor has particular relevance for the American armed forces, as it it set in Afghanistan and may be based on a real-life soldier. EA did not comment on the military's decision.

The reboot will be out October 12.

Too bad every military base has a Walmart within 10 miles that does sell it. At what point will people learn that just because you ban something doesn't mean it will disappear

I'm with you, there wasn't a huge outcry when "Battlefield: Vietnam" came out and they had booby traps and a female voice reading VC propaganda on one level. Then again there was 30-40 years from the end of that war to the release of the video game. Since we are still engaged in active combat is this different? I'm a big video game guy so I see it like a movie or a book, fiction based on current events.

and nothing will get those 19 year old PFCs and specialists to fly down to Walmart to round those games up like the authorities trying to ban them.
Besides, how does it hurt if the game gives any insight into the opfor's TTP?

I played the Beta and on the American side you start off as a Ranger. As you level up you into go the lone operator type, and your beard is the status symbol. On both sides the guy with the longest, hairiest beards are the top dogs.

This is kind of like when they made the Black Hawk Down game. Lots of guys were all up in arms about it etc... It's a game. Part of this generations "Pop culture" is video games. So be it.

I was so up in arms, I played it and beat it.

Im not a huge fan of the franchise, but I will probably rent it to see what's going on.

It's kind of like when I was in high school and the flavor of the day was that some thought hard rock/heavy metal was promoting devil worship. Those were just songs and this is just a stupid game.

For some reason there is a huge chunk of America that if "They" don't like something they don't want anybody to have it..... Games, guns, opinions.

If I don't like I movie, I leave, If they don't like a movie they want to ban it.

That is fucked up!

It just gets me a little chapped when AFFES exerts their moral influence over the masses.

Exactly, this seems like a knee jerk reaction before anyone actually checks the game out. Just like blaming Judas Priest for fan suicides and Marylin Manson for Columbine. Russia was pissed about MW2 because fictitious Russians got killed by fictitious terrorists. The developer said they worked with the Rangers and Tier 1 operatives to get as much real world input into the game as they could. I don't think they would then be completely insensitive to those same people that helped them.
