Selection?

I was wondering...This other day I was watching a BBC program on the British Parachute Brigade. One aspect of their training cycle is selection. And only if you pass selection, were you allow to continuing with jump training as well as advanced training.

What is the situation with the rangers? Are there an official selection process, before you start with ranger school? And what about jump training? Can anybody go for jump training with or without selection?

I know normally all elite /SF have some sort of selection, some more difficult than others...
