Been there and done that on the RSTA. I would like to add that in my most recent experience I realized the following. A RSTA Squadron is nothing more than an understrength Infantry Battalion filled with the wrong MOS.

YEP couldnt be more right there..... Not just understrength but less than 50% of an infantry Bn.

Kind of a waste of a Bn.

yep. if they want to play Cav games, they need to make some of them Div Cav again, and the rest need to become IN BNs, again.

oh wait, for Div Cav to work right, we need to go back to Div. maneuver elements on a contiguous, linear battlefield...

So true....

But then again the reconnaissance squadrons we have now are also unbearably short on firepower, personnel and/or with some funky organic structures. Like the 3/5 (brads/HMMWVs) platoon in heavy RSTAs, and the 2/1 Troop (motorized/dismounted) concept in the light RSTAs. I got some learning to do before I get to 5-73, but I gotta say, I am not a believer yet.

For what its worth, Ranger KW, I was in a heavy DivCav as an LT, and I was pretty fucking impressed with the team concept we rolled- even if it was Cold War.

Armor Journal has a decent article on the RSTA issues...heavy at least, comparing them to the old DivCav. And I can't link to it, as it is not on Knox's server yet.

As for light RSTA stuff, Rangers RgrPuck and Silverback, is it that it is filled with the wrong MOS, or is there a fundamental misunderstanding of its role and it is being employed improperly? There is no doctrine to guide commanders, and so far, from what I've seen the Light RSTAs are ALL different. 1-91 (my old unit, what it transformed and reflagged into) is commanded by an AR LTC and it runs missions like it is an understrength DivCav. The -73s at Bragg are all commanded by IN LTCs and as far as I can gather form friends who are in them currently or were recently, they act like IN Bn Lite. Definitely not trying to sharpshoot here- I think the concept is good, but it isn't well defined or resourced properly, IMHO.
I have nothing cool to say.

I'd add, that also in my opinion, 2 maneuver Bns per Bde is silliness. Fine if the Army wants a full ups Squadron in each Brigade, but don't break the fundamental task org for every mission we teach/train/execute- Support, Breach, Assault. 2 doesn't make 3.

I dont have to say anything in here you are the new guy here. I was over there more than a month and you know it. Please stop this slanderous action against me. I am not the one lying. I am sorry I couldnt stay with you guys over a couple months and help, but for you guys to take out your hatred and frustration on me is not fair. I have not lyed about nothing on here. If you feel like I have wronged you then tell me to my face dont get us both banned off here by creating a drama sitcom on here. I am sorry for one thing and one thing only that I didnt fight hard enough to stay with my unit that needed me that is it.
