Introduction - Kyle

Post by Khrdh »

Hi, my name is Kyle. I am a 20 year old college student living in Denver, CO. I have been lucky enough to have obtained an 11X contract with an Option 40 and am in the Delayed Entry Program. I am currently wrapping up the second semester of my second year of college, and I'll be shipping to basic training on June 4th, 2018.

I've been working on my physical fitness to make sure I'm as prepared as possible before I leave. I'm following the RASP prep program that you can find on Ft. Benning's website right now. I also meet with a group of DEP'ers every Thursday at my recruiting station as part of our Future Soldier Training, where we usually do some sort of basic PT. Yesterday, we conducted an APFT. My recruiter is a prior drill sergeant, so it was great to be judged by someone who knows proper form for the push ups and sit ups. My scores are as follows:

APFT
Push ups: 74
Sit ups: 75
2 mile: 10:28

The loop we ran for the run is apparently about 1/8th of a mile short of a true two miles, so my two mile time should be a bit slower than that. I want to make sure that I can max the APFT without issue before shipping to basic.

I have gained a tremendous amount of insight thanks to this site, and am looking forward to learning as much as I can before my ship date.

Kyle,

Welcome to ArmyRanger.com - If your goal is to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment you have found one of the best resources out there.

I have sent you a PM. Please read it and get back to me.

Those are excellent APFT scores. There are two other baseline physical standards for Rangers, a 5 mile run and chin-ups. Research those two items and execute them. Post your times back here for us to stay updated on your progress. Typically the chin-ups are done after the other three events for an APFT.

Are you finishing a 4 years degree before you ship? What is your major in?

Roger Ranger CharlieRanger1FFV and Ranger Disinfertention. Ranger Disinfertention, I have replied to your PM. Thank you for the info in regards to the Ranger physical standards. The RASP prep program I'm following calls for a 3 mile run to be done next Friday. Instead of the 3 mile, I am planning on conducting a 5 mile run, as well as 2 minutes of push ups, sit ups, and the chin-ups. I will post my results here then.

I am not finishing my 4 year degree before shipping. I'm majoring in finance as of now.

Good deal, Kyle. If you can, pick either the APFT redo with chin-ups or the 5 mile. Unless someone corrects me they should be done on separate days in RASP. So you should not have to do them all together unless you want to.

Roger Ranger Disinfertention, thanks for the clarification. I'll go for the 5 mile run on Friday and will plan on an APFT + chin-ups the following week to make sure I leave enough time in between them to see any notable progress.

This morning, I went for a 4 mile ruck with 45 lbs plus a 10 lb dumbbell. The goal was under 1 hour which I did meet with a time of 58:18. Not very impressive, but I am working on building a consistent ruck pace without running. Before I began my current training program, I was following a 6 week RASP prep routine. It involved a lot of running and rucking, and I would trade off between running and walking periodically every time I rucked. I always met the time requirements but my knees were getting beat to hell. Right now, I want to focus on increasing my ruck speed without running to avoid destroying my knees before shipping off. I'm sure I'll have to run with a ruck at some point during training, but for now I think it will be more beneficial to avoid any injuries that could cause.

I followed that short ruck with a core workout and about 45 minutes of lap swimming at my local gym for some low impact cardio.

Drock, that's great to hear! I guess we're sure to cross paths at some point!

As a general update, I'll be conducting a 5-mile run tomorrow afternoon. The last 5-mile I recorded was a 37:17, which I know I can beat tomorrow. I'll post again as soon as that is completed.

Well, I did not complete my 5 mile run. I started to get a sharp pain on the inside of my left ankle less than 1/4 mile into my run. I walked home, stretched a bit, jogged around and it actually felt better as I got warmed up again. I really wanted to get the 5 mile in so I went for it a second time. My ankle was doing ok, but it is pissing rain/hail here right now and I was underdressed (single layer shirt, sweats, no gloves). The cold got to me (mainly painfully numb hands) and I only ran a total of 2.3 miles. I know this is not a great excuse on my part. I’m going to ice my ankle tonight, and try for a 5 mile run tomorrow or Sunday. I will post again as soon as it’s completed.

Hey Kyle,

Please fix/add your signature and get it in accordance with our SOP here.

What's up with the ankle pain? That sounds unusual.

Roger, Ranger Disinfertention. Signature has been added.

I'm not sure where the ankle pain came from. I didn't have any pain on Thursday and my workout that day consisted of swimming, and push-up/sit-up training, so I didn't do anything that would have strained it. I went to a local running store this morning and they gave me a gait analysis, where they film your legs running on a treadmill. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who has had any running pains. They gave me a ton of info on what could be going wrong. I tried out an old pair of running shoes that are of a similar style that they suggested and went for the 5 mile run this evening. The ankle pain was apparent, but minor. The dirt trails around here were extra soft due to the rain and snow yesterday which was helpful.

5 mile run:
36:41

Not a big improvement from last time. I'm determined to get my time down to at least below 35:00 before I ship for basic.

Really great run time, Kyle. Keep researching your ankle pain and be careful about it.

Roger, Ranger Disinfertention. I ran 6x400's on Monday, ankle felt good and I did not have any pain Tuesday. I'll be sure not to push it if I feel any pain in the near future. Really strange that it came on so randomly, but I'm glad it's (hopefully) nothing serious.

Damn skinny kids and their fast 2 mile times.

How did you run a sub-11 two mile but then your five mile is only 36?? This is confusing to me

At any rate, keep up the hard work. Life is easy when you don't have to worry about being in good enough shape to hang.
