MEDIC !

Postby Tater Nuts » April 15th, 2004, 1:07 pm

Hey Doc,
I broke my toe (little, non load bearing one) last night. Is taping it to the one beside it still the standard treatment. It actually is more of a fracture, location is near the foot, a dark bruised ring 360 degrees, some swelling. Complicating factors, I am a diabetic, however pulse is still detectable in feet without ultrasound. What do you think ?

Thanks Bubba,
I'd hate to think I wasted all that hopping around on one foot and sniveling for nothing :D

Sorry for the late reply. By now, I'm sure it has fallen off...

If it is still not improving, you really need to have it looked at by an ortho, especially given your diabetes.

The taping sounded good, but with your medical condition, constricting blood flow to the injured extremity is risky.

Let me know if it is any better or if you ended up going to see a bone doc.

Doc,
I tried loose tape for 3 days, skin started sloughing off. Untaped now, color returning to tip and nail bed, I think it will be just fine, Can I get a clown shoe profile ? :)

Ranger Welshan,

Given your history of diabetes I imagine the skin sloughing was a concern. The possibility of a condition called peripheral neuropathy is always a concern with diabetics and reduced/impaired bloodflow to the extremities may cause danger.

Glad to hear the color and circulation has returned. Out of curiosity, if you don't mind an open forum question, are you insulin dependent or do you take oral medication or is your diabetes diet-controlled?

Insulin dependant, triggered by a reaction to antibiotics (destroyed islets) while at Battalion. Even though I was too old (21) I still contracted juvenile diabetes. I take 3-4 shots daily now.
