The knife thrower?

Post by JoBa »

A highly trained special operations soldier is also an expert knife thrower, he can bring down any opponent from ten to twenty yards away with ease.

Is that a true statement, or is it pure bullshit?

I'm going with the second response, but I'd like to hear your views on such a Hollywood favorite.

I'll go into my reasons later.

The only reason I would throw a knife at someone was to distract them while I reloaded to shoot them.....

That was the standard, and as always, standards evolve. Heck, even the SEALs are trying to get in on the mojo:

I'd like to think that like Dr. Jones, I'd bring a rifle to the knife fight.

In RVN I did practice with my knife throwing but not too many did likewise. Except that knife throwing towards your opponents feet game.

Knowing a person who has been stabbed by someone with malice and forethought, I'm not sure how effective throwing a knife would be. She said that oddly, it didn't hurt in the least (stabbed 6 times in the neck & torso. dude was bat-shit crazy..) I think you would literally get one chance to hit someone if you were lucky and hope you hit something vital.. and it wouldn't be the "one in the chest and then the dude dies quickly & quietly"..

I'd prefer a .45 with a suppressor.

You never throw your weapon away. Anything that could possibly come of it would be pure luck, nothing more. In all probability, your adversary would pick your weapon up and come back and give you a quick class in knife fighting.

I've only been stabbed once, in the leg. It didn't have bleeders, the handle broke off. The doc used a pair of pliers to get it out. I didn't feel anything hardly at all until the next day. I got nailed with a broken bottle in my shoulder, the pain didn't start for about half an hour, then it felt like the wound was full of broken glass. When I got to the ER, their wasn't any glass in it at all. (All of this was many, many years ago.)
