Interstate travle with a gun

Post by Invictus »

I'm driving this weekend from Texas to Arkansas for vacation.
I'm trying to determine what the law says about crossing state lines as well as Arkansas state law about carrying a gun in your car.

I DO NOT have a CHL as yet, but I know in Tejas you can carry in your car as long as your crossing several county lines.

Anyone have some insight?

Check out any states regs on this link

http://www.handgunlaw.us/

click on the RV/car link

I would say yes as Arkansas is not listed

States Not Listed
For all states not listed below you must have a Permit/License to carry a loaded firearm
anywhere in the vehicle. If you do not have a permit to legally carry in the state you are in and it
is not listed below the firearm must be unloaded and not accessible to anyone in the vehicle. Do
be aware that every state has different laws even when you have a permit/license issued or
honored by any state. It is your responsibility to know and obey the law.

Packing.org is gone? I used to go there all the time.

The best bet when driving through other states is to keep it in your trunk locked in a box, separate from your ammo.
Or get a Utah non-resident permit which is good in 37 states, and you avoid them other 13..... :D

Yes, they do make it rather easy to get a CWP here in Utah. I got one over 10 years ago; quick background check, $35 and a passport quality photo - 4 weeks later, it's in the mail.

Seems of late, overt carrying seems to be picking up with more and more folks carrying their firearm visible.

I carried from CA to Iowa last year. I didn't know what the laws were, and to be honest, I didn't give a rat's ass either.

Better to be safe than sorry. IMO.

Back when the Great Ape was at Ft Carson (just before going to play in the sand) I stopped in to visit. I pull up to the Main Gate at Ft Carson with my pickup and travel trailer, and the guard asks me if I have any firearms with me. Now here's this crazy old RVN Ranger thinking, "You gotta be shittin' me, I don't go ANYWHERE without my gun!" So I look the nice guard in the eye, smile cordially, and say, "No sir, I don't." :D

I'm looking through links posted on here and can't find anything about the non-resident permit. Do you know of a decent one?

Thanks!
