It seems they've updated the article somewhat. The version I read stated that she did not know that the 1st Amendment prohibits the state from establishing a religion. I have met the man, and know he feels this way. As you have probably seen in interviews, and news write ups, he feels that it is unfair that he receives a medal and those friends gave their lives, this was a very well written statement and humbling at the same time.
