Black powder is and has always been corrosive, frontiersmen and old rangers (Rodgers type) have always used hot water to clean BP residue from their rifles and cannon (windex wasnt commonly available at the turn of the century).

Usually the patrol officers have had a request to enforce tresspassing at places like this, ie. high liability for owners if tresspasser is injured, increased likelyhood of vandalsim aka tagging.
