I've dropped Deer at 600 yards so yes they are needed :) I've seen guys drop Elk at over 900, so once again they are viable hunting rifles.

Another option is picking up a 80% lower, you just have to know where to drill the holes.

The IOR's can't be beat for the price. I use TPS rings and a steel Ken Farrell base, it's a great combo.

I have the same problem being from MA. I think RRA and Bushmaster has them but it's best to call. I tried ar15.com and never really got an answer. You could try the NY forum there.
